The announcement “Bandcamp Bans AI” has caused a stir, hitting the middle of a discussion that has long since moved beyond technology to the question of what constitutes art.

At a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly finding its way into music production, Bandcamp is sending a clear message. The platform, which has long been an important venue for independent artists, has officially announced that AI-generated music will no longer be permitted. With this decision, Bandcamp is making it clear that it will continue to prioritize people over machines.

In a blog posted on 13th January, titled Keeping Bandcamp Human, the music platform outlined its new generative AI guidelines. The company stated that any music “generated wholly or in substantial part by AI” will no longer be permitted on the platform, and that AI-assisted impersonation of other artists’ work is also “strictly prohibited”.

Bandcamp said it is taking the step to protect its community of independent musicians, whilst maintaining confidence among users that the music they find on the platform is genuinely human‑made. The company emphasised that it is “articulating our approach to generative AI so musicians can keep making music and fans can trust the music they find on Bandcamp.”

The announcement also explains that users can flag content they believe to be AI‑generated using Bandcamp’s reporting tools. The platform reserves the right to remove music it believes to have been produced using generative AI, though does not provided a detailed definition of what constitutes a “substantial part".

Bandcamp said the guidelines were motivated by “the sheer quantity of human creativity and passion that artists express on Bandcamp every single day.”

“With this policy, we’re putting human creativity first, and we will be sure to communicate any updates to the policy as the rapidly changing generative AI space develops. Thank you.”

The policy represents one of the clearest stances against generative AI by a major music distribution platform. It comes amid broader industry discussions about how to handle AI‑generated content, including debates at other services regarding labelling, moderation and intellectual rights.
